OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss junior linebacker Eddie Strong of Batesville, Miss., underwent surgery here Thursday afternoon at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi to repair a stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his left foot.
Dr. Ed Field performed the 45-minute surgery as he inserted a screw in Strong's fifth metatarsal.
"The surgery went well and we anticipate a full recovery for Eddie," Dr. Field said.
According to team trainer Tim Mullins, Strong's rehabilitation has already begun. "Eddie's return to competition is uncertain at this time, but his rehab schedule has already been placed in motion," Mullins said.
Strong suffered the injury to his left foot on August 23 and had been held out of all practice and competition as initial tests were inconclusive for a stress fracture. Following two and one-half weeks of conservative treatment, further tests finally confirmed a stress fracture.
"We are thankful that Eddie came through the surgery with no problems," said Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe. "We'll just have to see how well he does during the rehabilitation process before making a decision as to his possible playing status."
Prior to the injury, Strong was considered one of the nation's top linebackers returning in 2000. He had made several pre-season All-Southeastern Conference teams, and one national magazine rated him as the nation's fifth best inside linebacker.
