Ole Miss-Tulane Postgame Quotes

9/2/2000 | Football

TULANE HEAD COACH CHRIS SCELFO
"I thought our guys played hard. We had a couple of tough breaks, but in my overall assessment, I told the team I was very proud of them. We've improved from last year at this point. We've made big strides, especially on the offensive side of the ball."

"Our defense played well against the run. Overall, our offense played well and made some plays, but we had a problem with lack of depth, and we got fatigued." I give a lot of credit to Ole Miss. Coach Cutcliffe and his staff definitely have the 18th ranked team in the country, and they will move up. Their defense is better than most people give them credit for."

"I thought Patrick (Ramsey) was playing well when he went down. I feel good about J.P. (Losman). He doesn't have time to be groomed, He has to be ready for the next game."

TULANE QUARTERBACK PATRICK RAMSEY
On Injury

"I think I'll be back. I had a little trouble lowering my arm, but I'll be okay. We've got great doctors and trainers, and I'll be in there everyday."

On losing
"It's all about bouncing back from adversity. We will bounce back. We are growing as a team. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go back out and rally the troops, but J.P. (Losman) did a good job. We have to get past this loss and move forward."

OLE MISS HEAD COACH DAVID CUTCLIFFE
Opening Remarks

"I can say rather quickly, that this was a team victory. We had numerous guys make big plays for us. We used around 50 players in the first half, which is good for us. There's a lot of things we need to address on Monday. We worked a lot on improving our second-half play, and it showed today with our effectiveness in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter."

On Miller
"Romaro has dedicated himself to this team. I've said this before, and I'll say it again, I think he is the most improved player in the conference. He was confident and well prepared."

On Manning
"Eli played well, but he lacked the protection from the second unit. He is going to need better protection to be able to make the plays we know he is capable of making. He showed a lot in doing the right things today."

On Deuce
"We used Deuce a lot of different ways today. Each week's opponent is going to dictate how we use Deuce. Today we used him outside and he is an excellent receiver. He was very effective on the kicking team and he affected their kicking game. I am very proud of the way he played today."

OLE MISS PLAYER QUOTES

ELI MANNING

"I didn't do anything great out there today, but I didn't turn the ball over. I thought I made some good calls at the line scrimmage. Next time, maybe I'll hit a couple more of my receivers and make some plays. Overall, I think I did fine today."

"I did feel good out there. I wasn't nervous or anything like that. The next time I look to be more confident out there, not worry about making mistakes and get the job done."

DERRICK BURGESS

"The defense came out dragging a little in the early going and just feeling our way through. We just told ourselves to stick together and stay tight as a unit. Once we did that, everything started going our way. We fed off the offense, and they also fed off us. We had some first-game jitters. We fought through them in the first half and learned what to expect from Tulane's offense and came out stronger in the second half.

On the Auburn game
"We've got to get better starting Monday. Today we were looking to get a win against Tulane. Monday we will start looking at Auburn. I feel sure it is going to be a good game. "

On Eddie Strong's absence from the game
"We knew we were going to be without Eddie today. We knew we would have to step up. Eddie's a big player for us, and we knew we had to make up for his loss as a whole unit."

DEUCE McALLISTER
On the touchdown reception
"I made a play on the ball. Romaro's pass was intended for Grant (Heard), and I was supposed to be running the outside route. I saw the ball come my way, and I made a play on the ball."

On the overall offense
"We knew as an offense that we had to come out in the third quarter and score some points. Last year we had a tendency to play flat in the third quarter. We were fortunate today that we played as well as we did in these hot conditions. Our offense was rated as having one of the top backfields in the nation, and I think we proved that today."

On Tulane defensive scheme to stop the run
"Most of the time, they had nine players in the box. They did a good job making us try to throw the ball. They were determined not to let us run the ball. We have enough weapons to score through the air, and we did that today."

On his own performance today in relation to the Heisman race
"I am not particularly happy with my performance today, but I know I can get better. I am not worried about the Heisman hype, but I know I can play a lot better."

ROMARO MILLER
On he and Eli splitting time at quarterback
"It made me feel good to see him out there. This team does everything as a team. Eli and I are the best of friends, and that's what are relationship is. We both just want the team to be successful and have a great season."

On hitting a lot receivers
"When we mix it around like that, that means we are clicking on all cylinders. Today was one of those days when everybody made plays for us. Tulane had their mind made up that they were not going to let us run the ball. That's when other players on our team have to step up and make plays."

On his play today
"I am happy we won. There were a couple of times when we messed up out there. All in all, this was a great team win for us."
