Ole Miss volleyball drops SEC opener

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Ole Miss volleyball team lost to Tennessee, 3-1, on Friday night in the Southeastern conference opener for both teams. The Lady Rebels dropped the first game 7-15, and then fought back to win game two, 15-13, before losing the last two-straight, 1-15, 5-15. The loss drops Ole Miss to 6-6 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while the Lady Vols move to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in the SEC.
Senior outside hitter Kira Zschau had a strong match for the Lady Rebels as she posted her seventh double-double on the season with 15 kills and 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Jaime Burns recorded 11 kills, nine digs and three service aces for Ole Miss, while sophomore middle blocker Erin Newsom added 10 digs and five blocks.
Senior Renata Nowacki had 40 assists, seven digs and three kills from her setter position. Junior right-side hitter Leigh Rittiner posted seven kills and two blocks, while fellow junior, middle blocker Abby Hollander, contributed seven kills and one block.
Tennessee had five players with double-figures in kills, led by Ariana Wilson and Janelle Hester, who posted 15 kills a piece. Setter Erica Lear handed out 53 assists.
Ole Miss will return to action on Sunday at 2 p.m., when they travel to Lexington, Ky., to play the Kentucky Wildcats.
