Ole Miss-Kentucky Postgame Quotes

KENTUCKY HEAD COACH HAL MUMME
"I think the fact that they had two weeks to prepare for us put us at a disadvantage. The biggest mistake tonight was the fact that I have pushed these young guys to heights that they probably cannot attain."
(On playing on the road)
"We didn't know how to handle playing on the road two weeks in a row against great teams in the SEC."
"Last week, we handled it pretty well offensively (versus Florida), but the defense couldn't handle it at all. This week, it was the opposite, but defensively, we didn't play well at the beginning of the game. I thought we played admirably in the second half."
"One of our goals for the year was to be the first Kentucky team in 50 years to reach three bowl games in a row. That goal we have a realistic shot at. Most people might not believe that after seeing our performance tonight. But, these are 19-year-old kids who have great optimism, and I'm blessed to get to work with them. I think we will be a good team. We're just very young and are learning lessons the hard way."
KENTUCKY PLAYERS
Quarterback Jared Lorenzen
"They came at us really aggressively. They pretty much whipped us from the beginning of the game."
On the safety/hold
"It just took the wind out of our sails. We went from having the ball on the one yard line to giving up two points and the ball."
Linebacker Ryan Murphy
"We implemented a new defense today, and I think we accomplished our goal of stopping the run. Ole Miss passed a lot more than we thought they would. All together, we didn't play a good game on either side of the ball. We just didn't put it together today."
OLE MISS HEAD COACH DAVID CUTCLIFFE
Opening Comment
"I want to commend the team and the staff for a tremendous job. Our staff had a plan. There are still things we can improve upon, but we played hard. This was a fun game to watch. It was a team effort. Anybody watching college football knows that you have to take it one week at a time. We have a lot of challenges ahead of us starting next week."
On Deuce McAllister
"He's tired and a little beat up, but he had a phenomenal game. He grew tonight. They tried to keep him from running, but he was a warrior and played a good game."
On Romaro Miller
"He threw the ball effectively. Second-half field position hurt us, but I was extremely proud of the last drive of the game."
On the Defense
"Fundamentally, we played well. Derrick Burgess played as good as any defensive lineman in the league tonight. Everybody was effective in stopping the play. The team effort was great, and we made the plays we needed to."
OLE MISS PLAYERS
Charles Stackhouse
"We did everything like we wanted to do. We played the game plan to perfection. We executed every play like we should. We had a lot of balance on offense. We ran when we wanted and we passed when we wanted.
Joe Gunn
"We felt like we had to come out and sustain drives on offense. We put a big emphasis this week in practice on keeping the ball away from them, and I think we did a pretty good job in doing that.
(On his slow start)
"I've gotten off to a slow start this season. I'm trying to come back and find my rhythm. Tonight gave me a chance to go out and do that. Some days, you have good games, and some days, you have bad games. You have to take it in stride."
Terrence Metcalf
"I think that they were giving us the outside, and we did a good job of sealing them off on the outside and making some big plays."
(On the SEC race)
"The SEC West is really wide open right now. We just want to focus on practice Monday, get better and correct our mistakes."
Justin Coleman
"We approached this game as a team effort. All week we worked hard and played as a team. We had a good feeling as we came out on to the field that the defense was going to have a good game. All the talk I heard all week was about Kentucky's passing game, and the defense just fed off that and decided it was time to step up tonight."
Derrick Burgess
"We came knowing that, if we just let him (Jared Lorenzen) sit still in the pocket, he would pick us apart. I didn't do anything different this week in practice. I just worked hard in practice and came out and played. I thought our defensive backs really came through and played great."
