Ask Deuce, Part II

9/5/2000 | Football

Sept. 5, 2000

Q: How do you handle all the media attention that comes with being a Heisman Trophy candidate? Does it put extra pressure on you to perform well?
- Sarah M., Bossier City, Louisiana
- K. Lance Adair, Custer, South Dakota
- Janice R. Tadlock, Forest, Mississippi

A: You have to be professional in dealing with the media, while at the same time enjoy it because you know that it can all be gone in a blink of an eye. The only thing you can do about the pressure is be yourself. The attention doesn't put any extra pressure on me to perform better, because nobody expects more out of me than myself.

Q: Deuce, what is your favorite food?
- Jeffery Williams, Amory, Miss.

A: Well, I'm kind of a strange guy when it comes to eating. I'm more of a fast food or junk food person. I guess the meal I like best is spaghetti.

Q: What is the most difficult part of juggling your time between being a full-time student and a student-athlete?
- Jerry Moore, Baton Rouge, La.

A: Probably, just being mature about the situation. As a freshman in college you learn that it is such a big jump from high school, as far as juggling your time and knowing what is expected of you as a player, as well as a student. It basically comes down to knowing what you have to do, and going out and doing it.

Q: Although he has been gone for two years now, Rufus French's signing with Ole Miss seemed to open the door for other big time recruits to commit to Ole Miss. Romaro Miller, Terrence Metcalf and yourself signed the following year. Did Rufus' signing influence you at all, or is it just a coincidence that he signed a year earlier than you?
- Jake Bramlett, Brandon, Miss.

A: We knew what type of players were here when we signed. We wanted to build a program that will be respected like Notre Dame and Nebraska. Since this is my home state, I felt that this program was in my best interest at the time, and I have no regrets about my decision to come here.

Q: What are your goals that you hope to accomplish on and off the field this season?
- Lantz' McClendon, Morton, Miss.

A: That we play as a team for four quarters. I think we did that particularly well this past weekend against Tulane. If we do that and continue to improve each week, I feel that any personal goals will follow.
