OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss senior defensive end Derrick Burgess of Riverdale, Md., has been added to the South roster for the January 20 Senior Bowl to be played in Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. The game will be telecast by ESPN.
Burgess is the third Ole Miss player scheduled to participate for the South team in this year's Senior Bowl. Running back Deuce McAllister of Morton, Miss., and defensive back Ken Lucas of Cleveland, Miss., were selected prior to the conclusion of the 2000 campaign.
Ole Miss has enjoyed a rich tradition when it comes to the Senior Bowl. Counting this year, 80 former Ole Miss players have been selected to participate in the Senior Bowl, including an individual year high of four in 1961 and 1990. The Rebels have also been represented by as many as three players in one year nine times. Seven Ole Miss players have earned various individual honors for their performance in the game.
In the final 2000 NCAA defensive statistics released earlier this week, Burgess ranked 18th in the nation for pass sacks with 9.5 and was 23rd in tackles for loss with 18 for a minus 84 yards. A second team All-America selection and first team All-SEC pick in 2000, Burgess ended his Ole Miss career with 164 tackles, including 43 stops behind the line of scrimmage for a minus 178 yards. He also had 17.5 quarterback sacks, caused six fumbles, had nine passes defensed, 23 QB pressures, two pass interceptions, and one blocked kick.
Another Ole Miss Rebel set to participate in a post-season all-star game is offensive lineman Keydrick Vincent of Bartow, Fla. Vincent will be playing in this Saturday's 2001 Rotary Gridiron Classic, presented by Tyco, at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla. The game, which features Team Florida vs. Team USA, will be televised by ESPN2, beginning at 12-noon Central.
Vincent closed out his Ole Miss career by helping the Rebel offensive line allow the fewest sacks in the SEC with seven, despite having to use four different starting line-up combinations due to various injuries. He appeared in all 12 games, starting 11 at right guard.
As a junior in 1999, Vincent was a key player on the offensive line that helped Ole Miss rank second in the SEC in rushing, averaging 182.5 yards per game, and second in the SEC for fewest sacks allowed with 16.
Ole Miss wide receiver Cory Peterson played in the 2000 Rotary Gridiron Classic.
