Rebels Win Saluki Booster Invitational, Lady Rebels Finish Second

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Ole Miss men's track team finished first, while the women's track team placed second to open the 2001 indoor season at the Saluki Booster Invitational meet hosted by Southern Illinois.
The Rebels finished with 124.5 points and held off SEC rival Mississippi State (111) and junior college powerhouse Wallace State (101) to claim the title. Rounding out the field were Southern Illinois (91), Southeast Missouri State (50.5), Arkansas-Little Rock (26), Lincoln University (23), Lindenwood University (19) and Central Methodist University (4).
Ole Miss claimed six first-place finishes on their way to claiming the title. Junior Brandon Saxon took home the first place medal in the pole vault by clearing 15'01", sophomore Walt Sligh won the shot put with a throw of 47'07", and sophomore Stacy Andrews claimed the weight throw title by throwing 58'04". Also collecting first place finishes were Hank Campbell in the 1,000-meter run (2:33.10), Kendrick Triggs in the 200-meter dash (21.80) and Lawrence Wade in the 400-meter dash (49.33).
Host Southern Illinois took home the first place trophy on the women's side, with the Lady Rebels and Mississippi State close behind, as the two SEC schools tied for second with 117.5 points a piece. Finishing behind the Lady Rebels were Southeast Missouri State (64), Arkansas-Little Rock (43.5), Wallace State (9), Lincoln University (8.5), Central Methodist University (7) and Lindenwood University (6.5).
Leading the way for the Ole Miss women was senior Teneeshia Jones who set a new meet record in the 60-meter dash. Jones was clocked at 7.30, breaking the previous record of 7.41 set by Andria King of Georgia Tech in 1999. Jones also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.49 and the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.44.
Senior Willette Woods won the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.03 and also claimed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.40. Also claiming first place finishes were senior Brandy Mack in the 600-meter run (1:36.61) and senior Brandy Barnett in the high jump (5'8").
Freshman Demetria Burks finished second in the 800-meter run (2:19.75), senior Monica Barnett got second in the triple jump (36'00".75) and junior Monique McClure took second in the shot put (43'02".25).
Ole Miss will return to the track January 19, when both squads compete at the SEC Quad hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
