OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss senior defensive back Ken Lucas of Cleveland, Miss., led the nation in passes defensed, according to the 2000 final Division I-A statistics released by the NCAA. Senior defensive end Derrick Burgess of Riverdale, Md., and junior defensive back Syniker Taylor of Gulfport, Miss., also ranked high in the final defensive stats.

Lucas was credited with 25 passes broken up and five interceptions during the regular season, giving him 30 passes defensed for the year, an average of 2.73 per game.

Taylor ranked sixth in the nation in passes defensed with 22, including 19 passes broken up and three pass interceptions.

Burgess ranked 18th in the nation for pass sacks with 9.5 and was 23rd in tackles for loss with 18 for a minus 84 yards. Burgess also had a sack in the Music City Bowl, but it did not figure in the final standings since the NCAA doesn't recognize bowl statistics.
