OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss soccer team earned its second 1-0 shutout of the weekend Sunday, blanking Auburn to take over first place in the SEC Western Division. The Rebels also knocked off Alabama 1-0 on Friday and finish the weekend with a 3-1 conference record, 8-5-1 overall.

Tiffany Weiss ' team-high fifth goal of the year provided all the offense Ole Miss needed. In the 53rd minute, freshman Kristal Menard fed Weiss, a sophomore forward from Dallas, on the wide left side, and she drove within seven yards of the net and connected with the top left corner.

"These girls believed in themselves," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "We knew all we needed was one goal and good defense. We made great adjustments during the game.

"I think our difficult non-conference schedule really prepared us for today's match."

UM goalkeeper Melinda Smith fended off a strong attack from Auburn, who outshot Ole Miss 16-13 for the game. A senior from Tacoma, Wash., Smith totaled six saves in picking up her second consecutive shutout and third of the year.

"I can't say enough about Melinda," Holeman said. "She played like a senior. She played like a leader. She came up with two tremendous shutouts this weekend."

Goalie Megan Rivera collected eight saves in the loss for the Tigers, their fourth straight of the year. Auburn, who has been ranked as high as 21st in the national polls this season, drops to 5-5-1 and 1-3 in league play.

Ole Miss took the first half of the weekend sweep of the state of Alabama on Friday against the Crimson Tide. In front of a crowd of 971 - the second-highest single-game attendance in Ole Miss Soccer Stadium history, the Rebels broke a scoreless game at the 52:32 mark when Mary Katherine Ulmer set up Amy Sample who connected from 24 yards up top left.

It was the second goal of the year for Sample, a sophomore from Crestwood, Ky., and the third assist for Ulmer, a freshman for Jackson, Miss.

Alabama bounced back for a 2-1 victory at Mississippi State on Sunday, leaving the Rebels alone at the top of the SEC West standings with a one-game lead over MSU.

Ole Miss continues its four-game homestand next weekend against Kentucky and Vanderbilt. The Rebels did not face either team in 2000, and will be looking for their first ever wins against the two programs. Friday's matchup with Kentucky is set for 7 p.m. CST, while the Vanderbilt game is Sunday at 3 and will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net.
