Kentucky Holds Off Ole Miss in Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. - Kristal Menard pulled Ole Miss within one goal of Kentucky, but the Rebel soccer team could get no closer in a 2-1 loss Friday night that ended Ole Miss' three-game SEC winning streak.

After Kentucky jumped ahead 2-0, the Rebels (8-6-1, 3-2 SEC) responded with a strong offensive push in the final moments of the first half. Off a direct kick with 30 seconds left, Menard, a freshman from Crestwood, Ky., fought her way through the back of a crowd and booted the ball from 10 yards away to the bottom left corner of the net as the clock hit zero.

Sophomore Amy Sample assisted on Menard's third goal of the season.

Ole Miss held a slim 6-5 shot advantage in the second half but failed to capitalize, as the Wildcats' 2-1 halftime lead stood through the final 45 minutes.

"It was a great matchup," said UM head coach Steve Holeman. "We did a great job of creating scoring opportunities. It's unfortunate that we gave up goals on two defensive mistakes. We showed a lot of heart, and played until the very end. We didn't run out of effort, we ran out of time."

Kentucky (9-5, 3-3 SEC) struck early, with Kathy Fulk (5) chipping the ball over two fallen Ole Miss players from 14 yards out in the eighth minute. The Cats increased their lead at 42:35, when Annie Gage (2) fired a shot in front of the goal that deflected off a Rebel defender and into the back of the net.

It was the fourth consecutive one-goal match for the Rebels and only their second loss in their last nine games. Ole Miss, who remains atop the SEC Western Division standings, faces its second straight East opponent Sunday in Vanderbilt (5-6, 3-3 SEC), who defeated Mississippi State, 4-2, Friday in Starkville. Sunday's game time is set for 3 p.m. CST, and will be televised by FOX Sports Net.

The Rebels boast a perfect 5-0 record on Sundays this year but have never won a match against the Commodore program, going 0-3 all-time.
