In this day in age - whether on the football field or off - physical appearances can be intimidating, especially if you're up against senior running back Charles Stackhouse. But this 6-foot-2, 240-pound West Memphis, Ark., native has one characteristic that you don't see on many players' faces, a smile that rarely fades.
"Some of the guys on the team tell me that I smile too much," said Stackhouse, a Criminal Justice major. "I don't mind because I'm just happy to be alive. I've been blessed with the ability to play football, and that's what makes me happy."
Stackhouse's contagious smile is why his teammates have nicknamed him, "Mr. Personality." This is one title Stackhouse is proud to hold.
"Everybody is thought of in a different way," said Stackhouse. "The name on the back of your jersey not only represents your school, but your family as well. It's nice to know that my teammates notice my happiness for life."
You may not see a smile through Stackhouse's helmet on gamedays because it's disguised. Stackhouse believes a football field is like two competing companies.
"It's a fight out there, especially in Southeastern Conference games," said Stackhouse. "You fight for your life. Great guys will take your head off, if you don't hit them first."
As a tri-captain, Stackhouse is responsible for vocally getting the players fired up at all times.
"I remind the team of all of the two-a-day practices and all of the hard work we've all put in," said Stackhouse. "I make sure they know we can't let the game slip through our hands."
Although he has a naturally positive outlook on life, "Mr. Personality" gets his inspiration from old players who possessed the same kind of love for the sport of football, most notably Walter Peyton.
"I like the way he put passion into each game, and he dedicated so much of his time to the sport," said Stackhouse. "I want to be remembered for doing the same."
With the smiles Stackhouse has put on Rebel fans' faces, he will surely be remembered fondly.
