OXFORD, Miss. -- Several members of the Ole Miss softball team are doing their part to help in the fight against Diabetes. Rebel rookies Andrea Brahs, Becky Testin, Megan Kozar and DeDe Justice will be participating in the 8th Annual Mississippi's Walk for Diabetes Saturday in the Grove.
Brahs and Testin are sophomore transfers in their first year with the Ole Miss softball program after playing last season at Indian River Community College in Ft. Pierce, Fla. Freshmen Kozar and Justice are from Palm Beach Gardens and Vero Beach, Fla., respectively.
The players volunteered for the event after hearing about it through Leaanna Hunt, a ball girl at last weekend's Rebel Softball Fall Classic, which Ole Miss won with a 5-0 mark. Hunt mentioned her third grade class at Lafayette Elementary was going to be walking and invited the players to join them.
"We were thrilled to here that they were all participating," said Ole Miss softball head coach Candi Letts. "We always encourage our players to give back to the community whenever they can, especially when it's such a worthwhile cause."
One hundred percent of the money raised by the Grove 5K/10K Walk-a-thon, which lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30, will benefit the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi. A portion of the money raised provides camperships to Camp Hopewell Diabetes Camp in Oxford for children with diabetes.
