Volleyball Places Seven On SEC Academic Honor Roll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Ole Miss volleyball team placed seven among a total of 67 student-athletes on the 2001 SEC Academic Honor Roll released Monday by SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer.
The entire senior class of Jaime Burns (Englewood, Colo.,), Abby Hollander (St. Charles, Mo.) and Leigh Rittiner (New Orleans, La.) made the team along with juniors Amie Ewing (Oxford) and Sarah Lansden (Kingwood, Texas). All three seniors made the team for the third time, while Lansden and Ewing earned the honor for the second time. Burns, Hollander and Rittiner are also candidates for the Verizon Academic All-America Team.
"It's a testament to the perseverance by the student-athletes on the college level in general," head coach John Blair said. "The struggle is to maintain a balance between academics and athletics. These five have risen above and beyond the call of duty and done an exceptional job to achieve such a high level. We are proud to claim them as our own."
Also both members of Ole Miss' 2000-01 graduating class, Kira Zschau and Renata Nowacki, were named to the honor roll. Both Nowacki and Zschau earned the honor for the third time.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must: 1) have a 3.0 grade point average for either the past year or for their career, 2) be a sophomore or higher in academic classification, and 3) have 24 semester hours countable toward a degree. The 2001 SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2000-01 academic calendar.
The Lady Rebels have placed 72 student-athletes on the SEC Academic Honor Roll in the history of the program, including a league-leading eight in 1996. With seven on this year's honor roll, Ole Miss tied for third overall with Arkansas. LSU had 12 student-athletes on the roster and Alabama was close behind with 10 honorees.
Ole Miss rallied to defeat Mississippi State 3-2 in a thrilling match Sunday at the Gillom Sports Center to conclude the season.
