Volleyball Loses Tough 3-1 Match To Rival Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team dropped a tough 3-1 loss to arch-rival Mississippi State Thursday night at the Newell-Grissom Building. With the loss, the Lady Rebels dropped to 6-18 overall and 2-18 in the SEC, while Mississippi State improved to 8-16 and 3-11 in league play.

Senior Jaime Burns led Ole Miss with her 13th double-double of 12 kills and 17 digs. Freshman Elena Garcia recorded her 11th double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs in the loss. Mississippi State was led by Dawn Steinhauser's 10 kills and 15 digs. She also had four service aces as the Lady Bulldogs finished with 14 on the night.

"Mississippi State did what they had to do to win the match," head coach John Blair said. "We did not do the necessary things at critical stages in the deciding games, and that is something we will have to work on getting better at before Sunday."

Ole Miss led game one 9-8 early on. Mississippi State used a 16-7 run to take a 25-15 lead before going for on a 30-15 win.

The Lady Rebels rebounded in game two, racing out to a 9-2 lead. Ole Miss built a 29-10 advantage behind strong play at the net and went on to win 30-14 to even the match at a game apiece. Seniors Abby Hollander and Leigh Rittiner and juniors Erin Newsom and Cheryl Wilson combined for nine block assists in the game.

State took a 2-1 lead in the match by winning game three 30-21. The game was tied 7-7 early, but the Lady Bulldogs went on an 8-3 run to go ahead 15-10. They increased their lead to 26-18 late in the game.

With Ole Miss trying to extend the match, the two teams battled back and forth to begin game four. Ole Miss took a 20-16 lead, but Mississippi State tied it up at 24-24. The two teams then traded points until Mississippi State took a 29-28 lead. The Lady Bulldogs' Michele Gordon served the ball and Burns just missed it outside on the return as MSU won 30-28 to clinch the match.

The two teams will square off again Sunday in Oxford in the final match of the season for both teams. Match time is 2 p.m.
