ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Ole Miss softball team dropped both games of its season-opening doubleheader with New Mexico, 4-3 and 4-0, on Thursday. The games were part of the Lobo Diamond Invitational, which runs through Sunday at Lobo Field.
Game one saw the Rebels (0-2) jump out to a 3-0 first inning lead. Ole Miss' first five batters reached base including senior left fielder Jamie Cummings, who batted 2-for-3 in the game. Holly Burris opened the scoring with a two-run double, and Desiree Layman followed with an RBI-groundout.
However, the Lobos (2-0) would answer in the fourth inning off a two-run home run from Michelle Carter, one of her two hits in game one. New Mexico would take the lead in the fifth with two runs off a Kathy Moore sacrifice fly and a Brooke Chaffee RBI-double.
Game two was all Lobos, behind a three-hit shutout from Hayley Punter. Moore was 2-for-2 with a solo homer, and Kelly Glass drove in three runs off a pair of hits. Layman, a freshman from West Palm Beach, Fla., paced Ole Miss, batting 2-for-3.
The Lobo Diamond Invitational continues Friday with the Rebels battling Colorado State at 3 p.m. (CT).
