Rebels Win Ole Miss Softball Classic

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss posted a 4-0 mark over the weekend in earning first place in the Ole Miss Softball Classic. The Rebels overpowered Tennessee-Martin, 11-3, and Nicholls State, 7-4, Sunday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
The UTM game, which was ended in the fifth inning on mercy rule, saw the Rebels (5-5) record the third highest run total in school history and the most since Apr. 16, 1997, the program's inaugural season.
Kristi DiMarco led the offensive barrage, going 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. The junior transfer from Palmdale, Calif., led the team in the tournament with a .500 average (5-for-10), a double, a triple and five runs-batted-in.
Jamie Cummings and Desiree Layman each batted 2-for-2, as Ole Miss outhit the Skyhawks 10-6. Freshman Leslie Day (1-1) earned her first career win, allowing one earned run over five innings.
Against Nicholls State, seven of the nine Rebel starters notched a hit, including DiMarco who was 2-for-3. Holly Burris drove in the first run of the game with a first-inning single and earned her first win of the season on the mound. A sophomore from Germantown, Tenn., Burris (1-0) surrendered one earned run with six strikeouts in the complete game victory.
In the early game, Nicholls posted a three-run seventh inning to secure the 4-0 win over Martin. NSU's Duffi Matherne tossed a two-hit shutout in picking up her second straight winning decision.
In the season-opening tournament for both schools, the Lady Colonels finish second with a 2-2 mark, while the Skyhawks fall to 0-4.
Ole Miss hosts its second straight tournament next weekend with the Rebel/Easton Invitational. The three-day event, which features Evansville, Samford and Southwest Missouri State, begins Friday at 1 p.m. (CT) with the Rebels and the SMS Bears.
