Oxford, Miss. - Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe announced Tuesday the signing of Mike Gibson of Litchfield High School in Gadsden, Ala., to a football scholarship.
Gibson, a 6-2, 280 pound lineman, was recently selected as the Alabama Class 3A Lineman of the Year for the 2000 season by the Alabama Sports Writers Association and has been chosen to play in the 2001 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic in Mobile, Ala.
"Mike Gibson brings a lot of strength and speed to our defensive front," Cutcliffe said. "He comes from an outstanding Litchfield High School program and is well prepared to make the jump from prep football to college football. We are pleased that Mike is a member of our Class of 2001."
A first team All-State Class 3A selection, Gibson rated as the Gadsden Times Defensive Player of the Year. He made the All-Region 6 team and was also Defensive Player of the Year in the region.
Playing for Coach Danny Kimble at Litchfield High, Gibson was team captain as well as the team's Most Valuable Player. He made the Gadsden Times "Dirty Dozen" list five times.
During his senior season when he helped Litchfield to a 9-4 record and the semi-finals of the state playoffs, Gibson was credited with 145 tackles, including 16 quarterback stacks, which led the area. He also had four fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown, while returning one pass interception for a score.
Gibson earned four letters in football, three in basketball, and three in track. He averaged 12.5 points and 14.0 rebounds on the hardwood and ran the anchor on the 4 x 100 relay team, which placed third in the state meet.
Other honors include the Captain Award and the Senior Award.
Cutcliffe earlier announced 23 signees to football scholarships in the Class of 2001.
