OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss will open a three-game series with Southeast Missouri State Friday afternoon at 3 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, weather permitting.
Game two of the series is set for 2 p.m., on Saturday, and the series-finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Rebels (4-1) are in the midst of a nine-game homestand to open the season. In mid-week action, Ole Miss swept a Wednesday doubleheader from Southeastern Louisiana, winning 20-9 in the opener and 9-0 in the nightcap.
Freshman infielder Matt Tolbert is the Rebels' leading hitter with a .533 average. He went 3-for-4 with two home runs - one from each side of the plate -- and seven RBI in Ole Miss' 20-9 win. Senior third baseman Lance Jones is hitting .400 with one HR and five RBI, and has recorded a hit in each of Ole Miss' five games this season.
Junior right-hander Pete Montrenes is scheduled to be the game one starter for the Rebels. A transfer from Southern California, Montrenes recorded six shutout innings, allowing one hit and two walks, and struck out seven to earn the win in his first start at Ole Miss last Saturday against Arkansas-Little Rock.
Southeast Missouri State (3-0) opened its season with a three-game sweep of Iowa State last weekend in Cape Girardeau, Mo. The Indians were scheduled to host Memphis on Tuesday but that game was rained out.
Indian pitching held the Cyclones to just six runs on 13 hits in last weekend's series. Senior right-hander Tommy Thomas, Friday's scheduled starter, pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out eight while taking a no decision in his start versus Iowa State.
All games can be heard this weekend throughout northwest Mississippi on WTNM Supertalk Mississippi 105.5 FM, and over the internet at www.olemisssports.com. Air time is 15 minutes prior to first pitch.
