OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss junior right-hander Pete Montrenes was named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Montrenes, a native of Fountain Valley, Calif., transferred to Ole Miss this past summer from Southern California and in two starts this spring, hasn't allowed a run during 12 innings of action. He earned his second win of the year this past Saturday in Ole Miss' 1-0 victory over SE Missouri State, limiting the Indians to three hits and two walks, while striking out a career-high 10 in six scoreless innings of work.
"He's very deserving of this honor, and obviously, we're very proud of him," said first-year head coach Mike Bianco. "In his two starts this season, he's pitched 12 innings and hasn't given up a run, and that's very hard to do today in college baseball. He's an outstanding pitcher and we think he's going to get even better."
In his Ole Miss debut against Arkansas-Little Rock on Feb. 10, Montrenes allowed just one hit, walked two and fanned seven in six shutout innings to earn the decision in the Rebels' 5-1 victory.
Montrenes is the first Ole Miss pitcher to win the award since Jeff McAvoy earned Pitcher of the Week honors in April of 1999.
Ole Miss is 6-2 on the year after taking 2-of-3 from SE Missouri State over the weekend. The Rebels host Austin Peay Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., to conclude a nine-game season-opening homestand. Ole Miss will then travel to Louisiana Tech this weekend for a three-game series.
