OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss will conclude its nine-game homestand to open the season Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., when the Rebels host Austin Peay at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. It will be Ole Miss' first night game of the year.
Ole Miss is 6-2 after winning 2-of-3 from Southeast Missouri State this past weekend. Freshman infielder Matt Tolbert continues to lead the team in hitting with a .409 average. He is also tied for the team-lead in home runs with two, and leads the team in RBI with 10. Senior 3B Lance Jones is batting .393 with one HR and six RBI.
Freshman RHP Adam Yates is scheduled to start on the hill. Yates is 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA. He tossed a complete game, seven-inning one-hitter in his first collegiate start against SE Louisiana in the nightcap of last Wednesday's doubleheader.
Austin Peay carries a 3-0 mark into Wednesday's game with the Rebels, after opening its season with a three-game sweep of Xavier (OH) last weekend in Clarksville, Tenn. The Governors are hitting .277 as a team led by senior infielder D.W. Blakeman's .500 average. Blakeman also has one HR and two RBI.
Junior right-hander Dustin Smith is scheduled to start for Austin Peay. Smith will be making his first start since missing last year when he underwent "Tommy John" surgery.
Following Wednesday's game, Ole Miss will embark on its first road trip of the season, opening a three-game series Friday at Louisiana Tech.
Wednesday's game and all of this weekend's games versus Louisiana Tech can be heard throughout northwest Mississippi on WTNM Supertalk Mississippi 105.5 FM, and over the internet at www.OleMissSports.com.
