Ole Miss Holds Final Pre-season Baseball Scrimmage Sunday

OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore Chad Sterbens, junior Burney Hutchinson and JUCO transfer Brent Walker all homered in Sunday's intra-squad scrimmage to lead the Blue to a 10-3 win over the Grey. It was Ole Miss' final pre-season scrimmage before Friday's season-opener.
Sterbens, Hutchinson and Walker totaled eight of the Blue's 13 hits, going a combined 8-for-13 at the plate with seven RBI. Walker was 3-of-5 with three RBI, Sterbens, 3-of-4 with two RBI, and Hutchinson, 2-of-4 with two RBI.
Junior left-hander Mike Gray, a JUCO transfer from Olney (IL) Central, pitched five scoreless innings for the Blue to earn the win. He allowed two hits and one walk and struck out two.
Freshman right-hander Adam Yates struck out seven in his five innings of work for the Grey, allowing one unearned run on two hits and one walk.
"Brent Walker had a terrific day at the plate offensively," said first-year head coach Mike Bianco. "As a team, we swung the bats well during the intra-squad scrimmages this spring."
"I'm also very happy with our pitchers, especially the way Mike and Adam threw today. All three of our weekend starters, and guys that will be throwing in mid-week, pitched well this weekend. I'm excited to get the season started."
Ole Miss opens its 2001 season Friday at home against Arkansas-Little Rock, at 3 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Junior RHP Pete Montrenes, a transfer from Southern California, is scheduled to be the Rebels' opening day starter.
