OLE MISS SOFTBALL CLASSIC
Ole Miss opens its home schedule this weekend with the Ole Miss Softball Classic, which includes Nicholls State and Tennessee-Martin. The Classic is the first of two UM home tournaments over the next two weekends. Ole Miss hosts Southwest Missouri State, Samford and Evansville, Feb. 16-18 in the Rebel/Easton Invitational. The Rebels placed second in their lone home tournament last year, going 4-2.

LOBO DIAMOND INVITATIONAL
Ole Miss posted a 1-5 mark in its season-opening tournament - the Lobo Diamond Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rebels opened by dropping a Thursday doubleheader to host New Mexico, 4-3 and 4-0, but rebounded with a 9-3 smashing of Colorado State on Friday. Ole Miss dropped the rematch with the Rams, 5-2, on Friday followed by a 5-4, nine-inning loss to Kansas. The Rebels closed out the Lobo Invitational with a 9-0 shutout at the hands of No. 14 Cal State-Fullerton. Senior Jamie Cummings was named to the All-Tournament team for her outstanding defensive play in left field.

REBELS TIE RECORD
In the 9-3 mastery of Colorado State, Ole Miss tied a single-game school record for hits with 16. The Rebels' last 16-hit performance came against Auburn on Apr. 19, 1998. Six different Rebels had two or more hits versus the Rams. The nine runs against CSU also matched the team's biggest offensive output from last season. Ole Miss posted nine runs once in 2000, against Nicholls State on Feb. 27.

NEWCOMERS SHINE
Freshman second baseman Desiree Layman was the Rebels' top hitter in Albuquerque, going 7-for-18 (.389) with three RBI and three runs-scored. Fellow rookie Jennifer Poore was also strong with a .357 average (5-for-14), while throwing out a pair of attempted base stealers from behind the plate. Junior transfer Kristi DiMarco was 4-for-4 in stolen bases, while her former JUCO teammate Amber Slaton notched a three-hit performance against Colorado State.

Members of the Ole Miss pitching staff with give a fastpitch demonstration during halftime of the Ole Miss-LSU men's basketball game, Wednesday at Tad Smith Coliseum. The Rebels' hurlers will give the fans a chance to see softball pitching up close. The game begins at 7 p.m. (CST).
