OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss hosts Tennessee-Martin and Nicholls State this weekend in the Ole Miss Softball Classic, a round-robin tournament held Saturday and Sunday at Ole Miss Softball Complex.
After the Skyhawks and Lady Colonels open the tourney Saturday at noon (CST), the Rebels will then face UTM at 2 p.m. in Ole Miss' home-opener, and follows that up with a 4 p.m. matchup with Nicholls. On Sunday, NSU and Martin square off at 11 a.m., followed by Ole Miss and Nicholls at 1 p.m., and the Rebels and Skyhawks at 3.
The Classic is the first of two UM home tournaments over the next two weekends. Ole Miss hosts Southwest Missouri State, Samford and Evansville, Feb. 16-18 in the Rebel/Easton Invitational. The Rebels placed second in their lone home tournament last year, going 4-2.
Ole Miss posted a 1-5 mark last weekend in its season-opening tournament - the Lobo Diamond Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rebels' lone victory was a 9-3 mastery of Colorado State, where Ole Miss tied a single-game school record for hits with 16.
Freshman second baseman Desiree Layman was the Rebels' top hitter in Albuquerque, going 7-for-18 (.389) with three RBI and three runs-scored. Also, sophomore Holly Burris was strong at the plate, batting .385 with two doubles, a triple and a team-high four RBI.
