OXFORD, Miss. - Dan McShea pitched five scoreless innings to earn his first victory since May 27, 1999, and Lance Jones and Josh Christian hit back-to-back home runs to key a six-run third inning as Ole Miss blanked Murray State 10-0 Tuesday evening at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
McShea (1-1) allowed four hits and two walks to earn his first win since the 1999 NCAA Regionals against Monmouth (NJ), after missing the entire 2000 season after he underwent shoulder surgery. He entered Tuesday's game having worked just two innings in two starts this season.
Clint Farrar recorded a career-high four hits, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored to pace the Rebels' 11-hit attack. Chad Sterbens also went 3-for-4 and Jones was 1-for-3 and tied a career-high with four RBI.
Preston Hesley (1-1) took the loss for the Thoroughbreds. He was touched for six runs on seven hits and two walks in three innings of work.
Sterbens and Charlie Waite opened the Rebels' six-run third with back-to-back singles and Tolbert followed with a RBI ground out to score Ole Miss' first run of the game. Farrar then singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by third baseman Ronnie Seets to put runners on second and third. A Hesley wild pitch allowed Waite to score to make it 2-0, and after Burney Hutchinson walked, Jones blasted a three-run home run to put the Rebels up 5-0. Christian then followed with his fourth home run of the season to cap the inning.
The Rebels added a run in the fourth on Jones' sac fly and later tacked on three runs in the seventh.
