OXFORD, Miss. -
The No. 17 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team won the doubles point against 35th-ranked South Florida, and never let up in taking a 6-1 win Sunday afternoon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. With the win, the Rebels improved to 10-3 on the year.
Ole Miss won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Rebels Martin Selin and Conor Casey downed Eric Gildhorn and Matt Duckhorn 8-1 at No. 3 doubles and then South Florida's Boris Babic and Jorge Escallon came back to beat Alex Hartman and Patrick Chucri 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. The 18th-ranked duo of James Shortall and Kristofer Stahlberg trailed 3-0 in their match to Paco Antello and Eden Kleiman, but the Rebel pair would rally to win 8-5 and clinch the point.
"This was a good effort from the team," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "South Florida came up with a huge win against Florida over the weekend, so we knew that we had to be at our best. The guys did a nice job of clinching the doubles point and then following that up by winning five of the six singles."
Stahlberg won his 11th match in a row, downing Nadim Naser 6-0, 3-1, ret., at No. 3 singles. Chucri made it 3-0 with an easy 6-2, 6-1 win over the Bulls' Kleiman at the No. 6 spot. Shortall, Hartman, Selin and Ciorascu were locked in tight battles on courts 1, 2, 4 and 5.
Selin split sets with Duckhorn at No. 4 singles coming back from 6-4 down to win the second set 6-4. He closed the deal in impressive fashion, winning the third set 6-0 to clinch the victory for the Rebels.
After the Rebels had secured the win, South Florida got on the board when Antello defeated Hartman 7-6(8), 6-3 at the top spot. The Rebels' Shortall won a third-set tiebreaker over Babic for a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4) victory at No. 2 singles. Ciorascu finished off the Rebel scoring defeating USF's Escallon 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
The Rebels continue a five-match homestand Tuesday with Louisiana-Monroe. The match begins at 2:00 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
