MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Von Kirk and Tywanna Inmon scored 17 points each and Inmon grabbed nine rebounds Thursday night as Ole Miss upset South Carolina 75-68 in the opening round of the Southeastern Conference women's tournament.
Eleventh-seeded Mississippi (17-11) led by as many as 17 in the second half before holding on at the end by hitting its free throws. The Lady Rebels hit only one field goal in the final six minutes, but converted 12-of-15 free throws during the span.
No. 6 seed South Carolina (11-17) could get no closer the final score down the stretch.
The Lady Rebels will face No. 3 seed and sixth-ranked Georgia in Friday's second round.
Besides Inmon and Kirk, Sherika Wright and Becky Myatt were in double figures for Ole Miss with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Cristina Ciocan led the Lady Gamecocks with 13, while Petra Ujhelyi came of the bench with 12 points. Nihan Anaz added 11.
Mississippi, behind some late 3-pointers in the first half, took a 38-24 lead into the dressing room.
Ole Miss shot 53.6 percent in the first half to build its lead but hit only seven shots from the floor in the second half. The Lady Rebels did well the free throw line, going 22-of-30 compared to just 5-of-9 for South Carolina.
South Carolina coach Susan Walvius said the Lady Rebels did a nice job drawing fouls and hitting their shots early.
"We knew who their shooters were and what to expect. There were no surprises," she said.
Ole Miss coach Ron Aldy called the first half probably the best the Lady Rebels had played all season.
"Especially from the 3-point line and the mixture of us drawing fouls, hitting our free throws and the inside-outside balance," he said.
