Ole Miss Splits Softball Doubleheader with Southeast Missouri

OXFORD, Miss - The Ole Miss softball team split a doubleheader with Southeast Missouri Wednesday, dropping game one 4-2 but rebounding to take game two 8-0. Freshman Jennifer Poore hit 4-for-7 with three RBI in the twin bill to lead the Rebels (14-17).
The second game of the night saw Ole Miss put up six runs in the fourth inning. Four straight RBI-singles by Phyllis Manley, Britte Hardy, Amanda Lehotak and Kristi DiMarco were followed a Poore two-run double to give the Rebels their biggest offensive inning of the year.
Jamie Cummings and Jessica Hamilton each collected a pair of singles as Ole Miss outhit Southeast 12-3.
Sophomore Holly Burris (2-4) tossed her fifth career shutout and first of the 2001 season, surrendering only three hits over five innings. Burris also stole home in a fifth-inning double steal to end the game on the eight-run mercy rule.
In the early game, the Otahkians (5-9) broke up a scoreless game with four runs in the fifth inning. Jenny Doehring drove in three runs with a bases-loaded triple, and then scored on a Renee Enos RBI-double.
Doehring (4-3) also picked up the win on the mound, holding the Rebels to two runs on five hits. Jennifer Hughes (7-6) scattered 11 hits over the full seven innings in the loss.
Ole Miss registered its runs in the bottom of the fifth with Lehotak doubling home Desiree Layman and later scoring herself on an RBI-single from Poore. Lehotak and Poore each tallied two hits in the game, which was one of nine in seven days for Ole Miss.
The Rebels make a return to Southeastern Conference play this weekend, traveling to Lexington to play the Kentucky Wildcats. Ole Miss and UK play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. (CT), and the finale of the three-game set is Sunday at noon.
