OXFORD, Miss. - Junior right-hander Pete Montrenes worked a career-long 8 2/3 innings to earn his sixth win of the season and pitch No. 19 Ole Miss past Alabama, 6-3, Friday night at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, in the first of a three-game Southeastern Conference series.

The win was Ole Miss' fourth straight SEC win, and the Rebels are now tied with LSU for first-place in the SEC Western Division at 5-2. Alabama (17-8) fell to 4-3 in the SEC and fell a game behind Ole Miss (19-6-1) and LSU in the Western Division.

Montrenes (6-1) retired the first 11 batters he faced and held the Crimson Tide to two hits through seven innings. One of the hits was a lead-off home run by second baseman Brent Boyd in the fifth inning to give Alabama a 1-0 lead. Montrenes finished the night allowing three runs on six hits and one walk, and struck out six.

Ole Miss capitalized on two Alabama errors in the sixth to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead. The Rebels then broke the game open with four runs in the seventh as the first four batters of the inning reached base safely and later came around to score.

Aaron Clark hit his ninth home run of the season with a two-run shot in the ninth to cut the Ole Miss lead to 6-3.

Glen Morris recorded the final out of the game when he coaxed Scott McClanahan to ground out to short and record his second save of the year.

Junior left-hander Mark Carter (4-2) suffered the loss. He entered Friday's game having walked just six batters in 43.0 innings of work, however, he walked five in seven innings of work against Ole Miss, allowing six runs, only three earned, and scattering six hits.
