LAST TIME OUT: Freshman Matt Tolbert's two-out, two-run single to left field capped a six-run eighth inning as No. 19 Ole Miss rallied for an 8-7 win over Alabama yesterday. The Crimson Tide jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings, chasing starter Mike Gray after 3.1 innings. Freshman RHP Nick Bradshaw (2-0) worked a season-long 5.2 innings of relief to earn the win. Alabama starter Lance Cormier (4-4) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs, only four earned, on nine hits and three walks, and struck out five. Burney Hutchinson and Josh Christian both homered in the game for Ole Miss, and Hutchinson and Tolbert collected three hits and two RBI each. The Crimson Tide threatened in the top of the ninth with back-to-back two-out hits to put runners on second and third. Bradshaw, however, coaxed Beau Hearod to ground out to second to end the game.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON TIDE: Alabama enters today's game 17-9 on the year, including 4-4 in the SEC and two games behind Ole Miss and LSU for first-place in the SEC West. Alabama head coach Jim Wells is 11-10 (.550) all-time versus Ole Miss.
LSU ROOTS: Both Alabama head coach Jim Wells and first-year Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco's coaching roots can be traced back to legendary LSU head coach Skip Bertman. Wells served as a graduate assistant coach under Bertman at LSU from 1987-90 before serving as the head coach at Northwestern (La.) State from 1990-94 and then moving on to Alabama. Bianco played at LSU during the 1988 and 1989 seasons, while Wells was coaching at LSU, and then spent two years under Wells as a graduate assistant at Northwestern (La.) State in 1991 and 1992. Bianco then rejoined Bertman as an assistant coach at LSU from 1993-97 before taking the head coaching position at McNeese State (1998-2000). Former Wells assistant Todd Butler moved from Alabama to McNeese State this past summer to replace Bianco after he accepted the Ole Miss head coaching job. Bianco was also a Bertman assistant at LSU when the Tigers defeated Wells' Crimson Tide, 13-6, in the title game of the 1997 College World Series.
REBELS AIMS FOR FIRST SWEEP OF TIDE SINCE `79: A win today would give Ole Miss its first three-game sweep of Alabama since 1979 in Oxford. A victory today would also mark the first time the Rebels have swept back-to-back three-game SEC series since 1972 when they swept three consecutive against Mississippi State in Starkville, Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Mississippi State again, the second time in Oxford.
YATES' STREAK REACHES 31: Freshman RHP Adam Yates pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in two appearance last weekend at Auburn to extend his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 31 dating back to a Feb. 14 start against SE Louisiana. Yates earned the win in both of his appearances against the Tigers and is 4-0 on the season with a 1.60 ERA (33.2 IP, 6 ER), which ranks fourth in the SEC.

The Rebels' last six games have been decided by three runs or less, including three one-run contests, and have gone 5-1 in that span ...
