Ole Miss Sweeps Away Alabama With An 11-9 Win

OXFORD, Miss. - Burney Hutchinson and Josh Christian recorded three hits each and Lance Jones went 2-for-5 with three RBI as No. 19 Ole Miss defeated Alabama, 11-9, Sunday afternoon and give the Rebels' their first back-to-back SEC series sweeps since 1972. It also marked the first time Ole Miss has swept Alabama since 1979.
Ole Miss is now 21-6-1 on the season, including 7-2 in the SEC. The Rebels' win, coupled with LSU's loss at Mississippi State, put Ole Miss in sole possession of first place in the SEC Western Divsion, a game ahead of the Tigers.
The Rebels took the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning on Hutchinson's two-run home run and Craig Nugen's two-run single. The home run was the eighth of the year for Hutchinson.
Trailing 10-6, Alabama (17-10, 4-5 SEC) rallied for three runs in the eighth. Adam Pavkovich and Peter Stonard hit back-to-back RBI singles to score Jeremy Brown and Scott McClanahan to cut the Ole Miss lead to 10-8. Casey Lambert made it 10-9 with a run scoring ground out to short.
Ole Miss would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on Jones' RBI single and Glen Morris retired the Crimson Tide in order in the top of the ninth to earn his third save of the year.
Rebel starter Ronnie Goodwin (3-1) worked into the eighth inning to earn the win, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and two walks.
Freshman RHP Adam Yates pitched 2/3 of an inning of relief and allowed two runs to snap his consecutive scoreless innings streak at 31 1/3 dating back to Feb. 14.
Jared Woodward (3-2), the second of three Alabama pitchers, was charged with the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits in two innings.
Nine different Ole Miss players recorded a hit as the Rebels out-hit the Crimson Tide 17-13.
Alabama scored two runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead before Ole Miss struck for three in the second on Christian's lead-off home run and Brent Walker's two-run single. The Crimson Tide regained the lead with two runs in the top of the third before the Rebels went on top for good with their four-run third.
