Rebel Softball Sweeps Southeast Missouri Doubleheader

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Desiree Layman drove in five runs, and Jennifer Hughes and Lindsay Price tossed shutouts as the Ole Miss softball swept a doubleheader at Southeast Missouri Tuesday, 8-0 and 8-0. The sweep pushed the Rebels over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 10-9.
In the first game, Hughes (5-2) earned her third shutout of the year and fifth straight win. The senior from Missouri City, Texas struck out eight over six innings in tossing her first career one-hitter.
The Rebels outhit the Otahkians (0-5) 11-1, led by Jennifer Poore. The freshman catcher batted 3-for-4 and opened the scoring with an RBI-single, and later scored, in the second inning.
Ole Miss struck again in the third with back-to-back RBI-doubles by Layman and Holly Burris. Layman later blasted her first career home run, a two-run shot in the sixth, to finish the scoring. The game was stopped after six innings on mercy rule.
In game two, Price (3-3) limited Southeast to four hits over five innings in another shortened, mercy-rule game. It was the first career shutout for the sophomore from Terry, Miss.
Kristi DiMarco singled, stole second and later stole home to open the scoring for Ole Miss. She also doubled home a run in the fourth and finished the doubleheader 4-for-8 with three stolen bases.
The Rebels poured it on in the fifth with RBI-singles from Layman and Rachel Davenport. Amanda Lehotak finished the day with three hits, four stolen bases and two RBI.
