IN THE POLLS: Ole Miss is ranked in all three major college baseball polls for the fifth straight week, receiving a rating as high as No. 15 by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, up seven spots from the previous week. The Rebels maintained their ranking from last week in the Baseball America and Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches polls at No. 18 and No. 22, respectively. Florida is unranked.
LAST TIME OUT: Ryan Corrigan's home run with two outs in the 10th inning off freshman RHP Nick Bradshaw lifted Arkansas State to a 7-6 upset of No. 15 Ole Miss Wednesday at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The loss marked the first time this season the Rebels had dropped back-to-back games, as LSU defeated Ole Miss 6-3 last Sunday in Baton Rouge, La. Ole Miss left the tying run on third base in the bottom of the 10th. After Matt Mossberg hit a two-out single, Matt Tolbert hit a sharp grounder to second, second baseman George Sterner's throw to first got past first baseman Kent Brunen, allwing Tolbert to reach base. However, Tolbert was thrown out trying to advance to second on the play. Mossberg was safe at third when Tolbert was tagged out. Corrigan finished the night 2x4 with three RBI and was one of three Indians to homer. Josh Christian, Burney Hutchinson and Lance Jones all recorded two hits each as Ole Miss out-hit Arkansas State 13-12. Christian also drove in two runs.
SCOUTING THE GATORS: Florida brings a 26-17 overall record into tonight's game, including a 10-8 mark in the SEC. The Gators are tied with Georgia for second-place in the SEC Eastern Division, one game behind first-place Tennessee. Florida leads the conference in hitting with a .324 team average and has hit 42 HRs, however, the Gators are last in the SEC in pitching. Florida pitchers have a team ERA of 6.61 and opponents are hitting .305 against them with 50 HRs. The Gators have eight regulars hitting .300 or better, led by junior SS Kevin Estrada's .371 (65x175) average. Estrada enters the weekend third in the SEC in hitting. Junior OF Matt Goss is hitting .341 (45x132) and leads the team with seven HRs. Goss is also tied with sophomore C Brian Rose for the team-lead in RBI with 35. The Gators, however, rank 12th in the SEC in pitching with a 6.61 ERA, and opponents are hitting .305 against them with 50 HRs.
SERIES INFO: Tonight's meeting is the 56th all-time between Ole Miss and Florida ... the Gators lead the series 32-23 ... the Rebels have won six of the last seven meetings dating back to the final game of the 1998 series in Gainesville, Fla. ... Ole Miss has won the last two series, sweeping Florida the last time the two teams met in Oxford in 1999, and winning 2-of-3 last year in Gainesville ... last year's series win was the Rebels' first-ever in Gainesville ... Ole Miss is 15-13 all-time versus Florida in Oxford, including 7-5 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field ... in Gainesville, the Rebels are 8-19 against the Gators ... tonight's game will be Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco's first against the Gators ... Florida head coach Andy Lopez is 8-7 against the Rebels in his seven years with the Gators.
AFTER 41 GAMES LAST YEAR: Ole Miss was 24-17 after 41 games last season ... The Rebels had a .286 batting average (415x1,449) with 36 HRs, 222 RBI, 73 doubles and six triples ... Ole Miss had outscored its opponents 250-233 ... The Rebels stole 37-of-54 bases and had hit into 22 double plays ... Ole Miss pitchers had a 4.67 ERA (360.2 IP, 187 ER), allowing 373 hits, including 32 HRs, walked 166 and struck out 266 ... The Rebels had committed 62 errors and turned 32 double plays.
REBEL DIAMOND NOTES:
* Wednesday's 7-6 loss to Arkansas State marked the first time this season Ole Miss dropped lost back-to-back games. The Rebels lost 6-3 to LSU Sunday in Baton Rouge, La., in their last outing prior to Wednesday.
* Ole Miss has lost 11 consecutive three-game SEC series when losing the opener, including the last two series at Arkansas and LSU. The last time the Rebels lost the series-opener and rebounded to win the series was against LSU in Oxford on the final weekend of the 1998 season.
* When winning the series-opener, Ole Miss has won 12 of its last 14 SEC series dating back to 1999. The two series losses during that time were at LSU in 1999 and at Mississippi State last year.
* Since recording back-to-back sweeps of Auburn (Mar. 16-18) and Alabama (Mar. 23-25), the Rebels have gone 6-7 overall and 4-5 in the SEC.
* The Rebels enter the weekend leading the SEC in triples with 16, two ahead of Arkansas with 14.
* Rebel pitchers have allowed at least one HR in seven consecutive games, and have allowed 10 or more hits in six of the last seven games.
