OXFORD, Miss. - Junior left-hander Nathan Lyons pitched seven strong innings to lead No. 10 Ole Miss (31-13-1) to a 9-3 non-conference win over Louisiana-Monroe (29-15) Tuesday evening in front 1,607 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

After a shaky first inning, Lyons (3-1) settled down to hold the Indians to one run on five hits and four walks, while striking out five in just his second start of the season. Michael Posey and Glen Morris pitched an inning each of relief to finish the game.

Nine different Ole Miss players recorded a hit as the Rebels out-hit ULM 15-7. Sophomore shortstop Chad Sterbens led the attack going 3-for-5 with a RBI. Clint Farrar, Burney Hutchinson, Lance Jones and Banks Robinson also had two hits each.

Hutchinson and Jones, along with senior right fielder Craig Nugen, also collected two RBIs each on the night.

Caleb McConnell (5-2) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and one walk, while striking out two.

Third baseman Willie Core went 2-for-3 for the Indians to extend his hitting streak to 29 games. Jack Skaggs also went 2-for-3 with a RBI on the night for ULM. Toby Childers went 1-for-3 and his fifth home run of the year with a solo shot in the eighth to make it 9-3.

After retiring the first two batters to start the game, Lyons issued three straight two-out walks to load the bases. He was able to escape the inning, however, as he coaxed Skaggs to ground out to second.

The Rebels took a 2-0 lead in the second on Nugen's two-run single and added another run in the third on Jones' fielder's choice groundout that scored Farrar.

Ole Miss took advantage of three Indian errors in the sixth to score five runs to break the game open and go up 9-1.

The Rebels and Indians will conclude their two-game series Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Ole Miss will then return to Southeastern Conference play Friday night, opening a three-game series at Vanderbilt.
