IN THE POLLS: Ole Miss moved up three spots in this week's Baseball America Top 25 to No. 16, and one spot in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Top 25 to No. 16. The Rebels dropped four spots in Collegiate Baseball's Top 30 to No. 20.
LAST TIME OUT: Senior RHP Dan McShea worked a season-long seven-plus innings and senior OF Craig Nugen went 2x3 with two RBI to lead Ole Miss past Memphis, 5-1, Wednesday night in a non-conference game at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The win gave the Rebels a split of the two-game season series with the Tigers. After allowing a two-out RBI single to Jay Fik in the first to put Memphis up 1-0, McShea retired the next 14 batters he faced. He finished the night allowing one run on five hits and one walk, while striking out three. Freshman RHP Adam Yates pitched two scoreless innings to earn the save. He struck out Memphis' top hitter, Daniel Uggla, and Tiger clean-up batter, Barrett Smith, with runners on second and third with one out in the eighth preserve Ole Miss' 3-1 lead. The Rebels then tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eighth when Chad Sterbens and pinch-runner Jon Reeder scored on a Layne Dawson wild pitch. Sterbens finished the night 3x4 to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games.
SCOUTING THE RAZORBACKS: Arkansas enters tonight's game 16-18 on the season, including 3-9 in the Southeastern Conference. The Razorbacks trail Ole Miss by six games for first place in the SEC Western Divsion. Arkansas has lost three straight and six of its last eight. The Razorbacks dropped 2-of-3 to Mississippi State last weekend in Fayetteville and fell 10-9 to SW Missouri State in 12 innings in non-conference action on Tuesday. Arkansas is hitting .279 (322x1153) as a team, with senior OF Scott Crossett the only regular hitting over .300 (.305). Junior OF Michael Conner has hit a team-high eight HRs, and freshman INF Brett Hagedorn has a team-leading 26 RBI. Razorback pitchers have a team ERA of 4.82 (295.0 IP, 158 ER), and opponents are hitting .252 (287x1137) against them with 27 HRs.
SERIES INFO: Tonight's game is the 30th all-time between Ole Miss and Arkansas dating back to 1982 ... Arkansas leads the series 20-9 ... the Razorbacks are 10-3 all-time versus the Rebels in Fayetteville, 9-6 in Oxford, and 1-0 at neutral sites (Starkville, Miss., 1995 SEC Western Division Tournament) ... Arkansas has won five straight SEC series against the Rebels dating back to 1996, going 12-3 against Ole Miss during that span ... the Razorbacks won last year's series 2-1 in Oxford, defeating the Rebels 8-1 on the final day of the regular season to knock Ole Miss out of the eighth and final spot to the SEC Tournament ... MONTRENES LEADS SEC IN WINS AND STRIKEOUTS: Junior RHP Pete Montrenes enters his start tonight against Arkansas leading the SEC in both wins and strikeouts. He is 7-1 with a 3.17 ERA (59.2 IP, 21 ER) and has struck out 56 while walking 11. Montrenes is also second in the SEC for innings pitched and his .219 batting average against ranks seventh in the conference.
STERBENS SEC'S SECOND-LEADING HITTER: Sophomore SS Chad Sterbens enters tonight's game second in the SEC in hitting with a .421 (40x95) average. Tennessee's Chris Burke leads the conference, hitting at a .469-clip. Sterbens went 3x4 Wednesday night against Memphis to extend his career-best hitting streak to 10 games. He is hitting .450 (18x40) during the streak, and has a multi-hit game in three of the last four contests.
REBEL DIAMOND NOTES:
* Tonight's game is the first of a seven straight road games for Ole Miss. In addition to the three games this weekend with Arkansas, the Rebels will play at Southern Miss on Wednesday before opening a three-game SEC series at LSU next Friday night.
* Ole Miss' 24-8-1 start marks its best start since 1995 when the Rebels went 25-8.
* At 9-3 in the SEC, Ole Miss holds a one-game lead over LSU and Tennessee for first place in the overall SEC standings.
* The 9-3 conference mark is the Rebels' best since starting 11-1 in 1972. Ole Miss has won three straight SEC series, winning 8-of-9 games, after losing 2-of-3 to Kentucky in Oxford, Mar. 9-11, to open the conference schedule.
