OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss senior third baseman Lance Jones was named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District VI baseball team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, Thursday.
The team honors student-athletes who are not only standouts on the field but also in the classroom. To be eligible for the team, athletes had to possess at least a 3.20 overall grade point average.
Jones, from Laurel, Miss., maintains a 3.44 GPA while majoring in Leisure Management. He was also one of two recipients of the 2000-2001 Southeastern Conference Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 26 for his efforts in the community, receiving a $5,000 scholarship.
"We're very proud of Lance," said first-year Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "This is a great honor and it recognizes the outstanding effort he has made to his academics at Ole Miss."
On the diamond, Jones has been one of the mainstays for Rebels, who are ranked No. 20, heading into this weekend's three-game SEC series with Mississipi State, in this week's Collegiate Baseball Top 30. He has started all 53 games in helping Ole Miss to a 35-17-1 record. Jones is hitting .311 with six home runs and 40 RBIs, and ranks fifth among SEC third baseman in fielding percentage, fielding at a .931-clip.
The District VI team is compiled of universities in the states of Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Arkansas. Members of the district team go on to be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America.
