REBEL SEC TOURNEY NOTES: Ole Miss is making its eighth appearance in the Southeastern Conference Tournament since the event started in 1977 ... The Rebels missed qualifying for last year's tournament, finishing a half-game behind Kentucky for the eighth and final spot ... Yesterday's 17-6 win over Tennessee snapped Ole Miss' four-game losing streak in SEC Tournament openers ... The Rebels are 10-13 (.435 winning percentage) all-time in the SEC Tournament, including 0-1 against LSU ... The only meeting between the two schools in the SEC Tournament was in the 1993 SEC Western Division Tournament at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La., a 6-3 Tiger win ... The 17 runs scored by Ole Miss against Tennessee marked the most the Rebels have scored in a postseason game, including the NCAA Regionals and College World Series. Ole Miss' previous high was 15 against Florida in the 1960 SEC Championship Series ... The 11-run margin of victory is Ole Miss' largest in the SEC Tournament. The Rebels' previous largest margin of victory was eight against Mississippi State in the 1977 tournament, winning 11-3 ... Ole Miss has not won two games in the tournament since 1977, when the Rebels went 4-1 en route to their only tournament championship.

LAST TIME OUT: Ole Miss broke open a 4-1 lead with an eight-run third inning en route to a 17-6 win over Tennessee in yesterday's SEC Tournament opener. All eight of the runs in the third came with two outs as nine straight batters reached base safely. Sophomore SS Chad Sterbens went 3x5 with two RBIs as Ole Miss out-hit Tennessee 18-8. Clint Farrar and Carl Lafferty also drove in three runs each. Junior RHP Pete Montrenes (10-4) pitched five complete innings in earning the win, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and no walks.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS: LSU enters today's game 38-18-1 after defeating Florida 10-0 in first-round action of the SEC Tournament yesterday. The Tigers are hitting .322 as a team,and entered the tournament as the SEC's top hitting team. LSU also ranked first in runs scored (485) and team slugging percentage (.509). Junior 1B Bryan Moore leads the team with a .383 (80x209) BA. Junior OF Todd Linden is batting .313 (66x211) and is the team leader in both HRs (16) and RBIs (62). Tiger pitchers have a team ERA of 4.53 (506.2 IP, 255 ER), and opponents are hitting .266 against them with 40 HRs.

SERIES INFO: Today's meeting is the 281st all-time between Ole Miss and LSU ... the Tigers lead the series 152-128, including a 2-1 series win over the Rebels in Baton Rouge this past April ... LSU is 32-9 against Ole Miss since 1990 ... Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco has a 3-5 career record against him alma mater, LSU, at both McNeese State (1998-2000) and Ole Miss. Bianco played two years at LSU from 1988-89, and was team captain of the 1989 squad that finished third at the College World Series. He later served as an assistant at LSU under Skip Bertman from 199-97, helping the Tigers to three national championships ... Tiger head coach Skip Bertman has posted a 47-14 career mark against the Rebels.

REVIEWING THE 2001 LSU SERIES: LSU won 2-of-3 from Ole Miss during their three-game SEC series in Baton Rouge, April 13-15. The Tigers took the series by winning the rubber-match, 6-3, after both teams took turns routing each other the first two games. LSU won the series-opener 15-2 while Ole Miss took game two 23-10 behind a 23-hit attack. LSU hit .349 in the series, led by junior SS Ryan Theriot, who went 7x13 (.538) at the plate with seven runs scored. Ole Miss batted .328 as a team, led by senior 3B Lance Jones. Jones was 7x11 (.636) with two HRs and four RBIs. For the series, LSU outscored Ole Miss 31-28.

IN THE POLLS: Ole Miss enters this afternoon's game ranked No. 23 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Top 30. It is the ninth straight week that the Rebels have been ranked in one of the three major college baseball polls ... LSU enters today's game ranked #9 in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Top 25, No. 11 by Collegiate Baseball, and No. 12 by Baseball America.

REBEL DIAMOND NOTES: Ole Miss enters today's game having won back-to-back games following a season-long five-game losing streak from May 4-12 ... Ole Miss is two hits shy of reaching the 600-mark for only the second time in the past six years. The 1999 squad recorded a school single-season record of 658 hits in 62 games ... The Rebels recorded five extra-base hits yesterday against Tennessee, one shy of their total in the previous six games against SEC opponents ... The Rebels are 5-10 (.333 winning percentage) the last two seasons during the month of May.
