Ole Miss Tied For Eighth Place

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Paced by Troy Muller's opening round 69, the Ole Miss men's golf team finds itself tied for eighth place Thursday at the 2001 NCAA East Regional at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course. The Rebels fired an opening day score of 285. Ole Miss is tied with Georgia Tech and Clemson for eighth position.
East Tennessee State has the opening round lead with a 275. Florida is one shot back of East Tennessee State with a 276.
" I think we played well today, but I feel like we could have played better," said Ole Miss coach Woody Cowart. "We didn't take advantage of some opportunities that we had, but we are still in the hunt. Troy (Muller) played well today and knew he had to in order for us to be successful."
Muller is tied for ninth place individually with an opening round 69. Andrew Medley fired a 70 and is tied for 16th place overall. Phil Caravia and J.J. Thompson are tied for 55th place after a first round score of 73. Tommy Clement is tied for 74th place after firing an opening round 74.
Florida's Camilo Villegas has the individual lead with a 64. Thomas Lee of East Tennesee State is two shots back of Villegas with a 66 on the day.
The top 10 teams from each of the three regions (East, Central, and West) will advance to the NCAA Championships in Durham, N.C., May 30-June 3. The two lowest scoring individuals in each regional, whose team does not advance, will also compete in the championships.
Second round play is scheduled for Friday, while final round action will take place on Satruday.
