Rebels Drop Season Finale to Southern Illinois

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Ole Miss softball ended its 2001 season Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to Southern Illinois in a neutral game played in Cape Girardeau, Mo. The Rebels finish the year with a 18-40 record and 5-22 mark in the SEC.
SIU (35-15) broke a scoreless game in the fifth with a pinch-hit RBI-single by Elissa Hopkins, giving the Salukis a 1-0 lead. The Rebels answered with the tying run in the sixth. Jennifer Poore's single loaded the bases for Holly Burris, who drove in Amber Slaton with a sacrifice fly to left.
The game would remain knotted until the seventh when an RBI-single by Marta Viefhaus drove in the game-winning run for SIU. Burris (2-14) suffered the loss in relief, allowing one run in 1.2 innings. UM starter Leslie Day tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, and Lindsay Price followed with 2.2 innings of work, allowing one unearned run. Southern's Erin Stremsterfer (27-7) scattered six hits with 11 strikeouts in the win.
