OXFORD, Miss. - Alex Hartman, James Shortall and Kristofer Stahlberg of the Ole Miss men's tennis team, will begin competing in the NCAA individual championships Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

"Alex, James and Kristofer have all had a great year," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "I am proud of Alex for earning a top 16 seed, and with that, becoming our 16th All-American. We are looking forward to playing again. These guys were obviously disappointed that we didn't make the team finals and want to do well in the individual championships."

Hartman, currently ranked No. 10 in the nation in singles, is seeded Nos. 9-16 in the 64-player draw, which features the nation's top players. The All-SEC first team selection will face Gert Vilms of BYU in the first round at 11:30 a.m. Hartman comes into the NCAA Singles Championships with a 26-14 overall record. He defeated 16th-ranked Andrew Park of Southern California 6-0, 6-3 in the Rebels' NCAA second round match.

Shortall, ranked No. 35 in singles, is coming into the NCAA Championships on a hot streak having won nine in a row. He won both his matches in the NCAA Team Championships including a win over the 2001 PAC-10 Singles Champion. Shortall, an All-SEC honoree, will face Texas A&M's Shuon Madden in the first round at 9:30 a.m.

Stahlberg is making his first ever appearance in the NCAA individual championships. He will face Jason Marshall of Purdue in the first round at 8:00 a.m. Stahlberg enters the NCAAs with a 24-8 overall record. He earned All-SEC second team honors in singles and doubles.

Ole Miss will have a doubles team in the field of 64 as 14th-ranked Shortall and Stahlberg made the doubles championships. Shortall and Stahlberg bring a 16-5 record into the tournament. They will face TCU's Trace Fielding and Jimmy Haney in the first round, Friday.

This is Shortall's third appearance in the NCAA Championships in singles and doubles. He teamed with former All-American Vikrant Chadha to reach the NCAA Doubles Final Four last year.
