OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore Ole Miss men's tennis player Alex Hartman was among the top 16 seeds to advance to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship, Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. James Shortall and Kristofer Stahlberg were not as successful, falling in tight matches to end their singles bid.

Hartman, seeded Nos. 9-16, defeated BYU's Gert Vilms 6-3, 7-6(5). He will face 52nd-ranked Jeugenij Cario of Depaul, who advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Edo Bawano (Kentucky). Hartman, who earned All-America status by being a top 16 seed can also earn the honor by reaching the round of 16 with a win over Cario.

Shortall won the first set in his match to Texas A&M's Shuon Madden 6-3 and was up 4-1, before seeing the Aggie come back to take the second set 6-4 and the third 6-3 for the win. The loss snaps Shortall's nine-match win streak and ends his singles career at 92-53. The senior from Feilding, New Zealand, was an All-American and three-time All-SEC honoree.

Stahlberg, who faced Jason Marshall of Purdue, won the first set 6-4, but he lost the second and third sets 6-3, 6-4. He ends the season with a 24-9 overall record. Stahlberg is making his first appearance in the NCAA individual championships.

Shortall and Stahlberg will compete in the NCAA doubles field of 64 beginning Friday. The 14th-ranked pair will face Trace Fielding and Jimmy Haney of TCU. Shortall and Stahlberg own a 16-5 record and earned All-SEC honors in doubles.
