OXFORD, Miss, - Ole Miss baseball signed University Christian's Anthony Cupps, of Madison, Miss., to a national letter of intent to play baseball for the Rebels, head coach Mike Bianco announced Tuesday. He will be eligible during the 2001-2002 academic year.

Cupps, 6-feet-4, 195 pounds, went 5-3 this season with a 1.18 ERA and registered 66 strikeouts. He was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in this month's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, and participated in the Mississippi Private School Association (MPSA) All-Star Game.

"Anthony is an outstanding high school signee for us," Bianco said. "He has an opportunity to help us on the mound next season as a true freshman."

At the plate, Cupps hit .508 last spring with one home run and 28 RBIs. He also recorded 15 doubles.

Ole Miss went 39-23-1 this past spring in Bianco's first season as head coach. The Rebels tied a school record with 17 SEC wins, as they tied for second in the SEC Western Division and earned a berth in the NCAA Regionals.
