OXFORD, Miss. - Rain and sloppy field conditions forced Ole Miss to alter the game plan for practice in the second day of full squad two-a-day practices. The Rebels moved under the East stands in Vaught-Hemingway stadium where they worked on non-contact drills.
Despite the limitations placed on the team because of poor field conditions, Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe said he was pleased with his team's effort, especially focusing on the mental aspect of the game.
"It was good that we got some things done without being able to get on the field," said Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe. "We didn't get physical, but we got some things done mentally on both sides of the ball. You make the best out of a bad situation, that's all you can do."
The team broke into several units and walked through drills and rehearsed scenarios under the direction of the coaching staff. The pace was set to working more on mental fundamentals that go with the physical aspect of the game.
The wet field conditions were a concern of Cutcliffe's, who wants his team healthy when the season starts on Sept 1, 2001.
"Our main concern is for the health and safety of the players," Cutcliffe said. "We are more worried about the lightening and the condition of the field. If the field is not in a condition for us to get accomplished what we need to do safely, then we won't be out on the field. I'm more worried about the players slipping and sustaining injuries."
The Rebels will continue with two practices through Saturday, before taking Sunday off.
Ole Miss will host "Meet the Rebels Day" presented by Cellular One on August 18, in the Grove. The Rebels kick off the 2001 campaign against Murray State on Sept. 1, at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field.
