OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss worked out for less than two hours Wednesday in shorts and shoulder pads after scrimmaging Tuesday afternoon. Head Coach David Cutcliffe was happy with his team's work ethic during the up-tempo practice, and also noted improvement as a team after watching Tuesday's scrimmage film.
"I thought we got a lot done in an hour and 45 minutes," Cutcliffe said of Wednesday's practice. "We rehearsed some things game-plan wise for Murray State and I was happy with the way we moved around."
Cutcliffe noted the play of the defense and the effort of the offensive linemen from Tuesday's scrimmage.
"I thought we played faster on both sides of the ball, which is good," Cutcliffe said. "It was very evident that the defense tackled well. We played a lot of different combinations on the offensive line and I was really pleased with the young linemen and their effort. A lot of them were thrown into the fire sooner than we expected they would, and I really appreciate their effort and attitude. It was one of those scrimmages that you can see where we got better as a team."
While Ole Miss spent time working on some of the game plan for the Sept. 1 season-opener against Murray State, Cutcliffe said the team is not yet in a regular game-week mode. The Rebels will still spend the week working on the basic offensive and defensive schemes before starting their normal game week routine.
"The players are ready for a game but they're not sensing game week yet," Cutcliffe said. "This is always a tough time for football players. When game week comes around, they know its game week. In their minds there is still a lot of practices left between now and Sept. 1.
"We're still in a camp mode, but we're beginning to put things in for a game."
On the injury front, senior offensive lineman Matt Koon underwent an MRI after injuring his knee in Tuesday's scrimmage. He is listed as day-to-day. Cutcliffe also said there were several other players with minor injuries.
"We've got some people with some minor nagging injuries," Cutcliffe said. "but nothing that should keep anyone out of a ball game."
