Volleyball Drops Two Matches At Days Inn Classic

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team (0-2) had a rough start to the 2001 season, losing to James Madison 3-0, and Rutgers 3-0, at the Days Inn Classic Friday at the Sinclair Gym in Godwin Hall.
In the first match, James Madison, behind the strong play of Jessica Evers and Dana Jones won 30-23, 30-25 and 30-24. In the deciding game, Ole Miss jumped out to a 5-1 lead trying to extend the match, and then James Madison tied it up. The game was tied 12-12 before the Dukes took the lead 15-13. They never trailed again, using a 7-1 run to increase their lead late in the game.
Senior outside hitter Jaime Burns notched nine kills and eight digs to lead the Lady Rebels. Sophomore setter Jade Polonich finished with 23 assists. Junior Erin Newsom hit .500 with eight kills on 14 attempts.
Evers and Jones led the way for the Dukes with 11 kills each. Setter Lauren Ruzicka had 28 assists for the 2000 Colonial Athletic Association champions.
Against Rutgers, the Lady Rebels finished with 31 kills on 116 attempts for a .095 hitting percentage. Abby Hollander led the team with seven kills and 11 digs. Leigh Rittiner hit for .357 with six kills in 14 attempts.
The Scarlet Knights, who won 30-20, 30-24 and 30-25, hit .244 for the match with 51 kills on 131 attempts. Senior middle blocker Mary Kiriakou tallied 13 kills, eight digs and four block assists. Sophomore outside hitter Shayla Bush finished with 11 kills and eight digs.
Ole Miss will conclude action at the Days Inn Classic with a 11:00 a.m. match against Xavier on Saturday.
