Volleyball Loses Hard-Fought Match To Xavier

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team lost a hard-fought 3-0 match to Xavier University on the final day of the James Madison University Days Inn Classic Saturday at Sinclair Gym, Godwin Hall. The loss drops the Lady Rebels to 0-3, while Xavier claims the tournament title with three wins.
Xavier took the first game 30-16. The Musketeers led 24-10 at one point during the game. In the second game, Xavier led 27-24, but Ole Miss responded to tie the match with four freshmen on the floor at one time. The match went back and forth from that point on with the Lady Rebels holding a couple of game points before seeing Xavier take the game 35-33.
In the third game, the Musketeers jumped out to a 18-10 lead and were ahead 27-24 but, Ole Miss would rattle off four consecutive points to take a 28-27 lead. With the score knotted at 28-28, Xavier scored the final two points for the 30-28 clinching win.
Jaime Burns led the Lady Rebels with a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs. She finished the tournament with 24 kills and 28 digs. Freshman Elena Garcia tallied nine kills, seven digs and one service ace against Xavier. She posted a .375 hitting percentage. Sophomore Jade Polonich had 26 assists.
Sara Bachus, the 2000 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, recorded 23 kills and seven digs to lead the Musketeers. Katey Wygant, finished with 11 kills and six digs and Jill Hampton had 16 digs for Xavier.
The Lady Rebels will look for their first victory of the 2001 season as they host the Magnolia Invitational Sept. 7-8 at the Gillom Sports Center. The tournament includes Arkansas State, Samford, Southern Mississippi and Tennessee-Martin.
