Volleyball Team Set To Open SEC Play

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team will open Southeastern Conference play this weekend with matches at Alabama and Auburn. The Lady Rebels will face Alabama Friday at 7 p.m. and then Auburn on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Ole Miss enters SEC play with a 2-6 record. They are coming off a disappointing 3-2 loss at Memphis on Monday. In that match, the Lady Rebels led 2-0, but Memphis rallied to win the final three games for the victory.
Senior Jaime Burns recorded her 1,000th career kill on the first play against Memphis. She now has 1,024 kills after finishing with 25 for the night. She currently has 787 digs and needs 213 to join the 1,000/1,000 club. Burns leads the team with 113 kills and 97 digs.
Freshman outside hitter Elena Garcia is second on the team with 93 kills and 81 digs. Senior middle blocker Abby Hollander leads the team in hitting with a .397 attack percentage. Sophomore setter Jade Polonich had 304 assists for the season.
Alabama comes into the weekend with a 5-2 record. In their last competition, the Crimson Tide dropped a 3-0 decision to Xavier and then lost 3-2, to Liberty, at the Xavier Invitational. Alabama is hitting only .168 for the season with 381 kills. They are led by freshman outside hitter Erin Heffner, who is averaging 3.08 kills per game.
Auburn enters the opening weekend of SEC play with a 1-7 record. They defeated Jacksonville 3-0 for their lone win of the season. The Tigers are coming off a 3-0 loss to Syracuse on Sept. 8 and a 3-1 defeat to Charlotte on Sept. 9. Junior transfer Grace Boyd leads Auburn with 2.62 kills per game and a hitting percentage of .291.
