Soccer Comes Up Short at Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. - Ole Miss' Erin Edmundson netted her first career goal, but it was not enough as the Rebel soccer team fell short at Arizona State, 3-1, Friday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
ASU (4-1) tapped the scoreboard first when Patrice Feulner drove into the box and connected from five yards away in the seventh minute. Stephanie Peel earned the assist.
The Rebels (2-4) evened the game at 1-1 at the 15:07 mark when Lindley Beckman's corner kick set up Edmundson, a sophomore defender from Raleigh, N.C., with a 12-yard header. It was the second assist of the season for Beckman.
After only five combined shots in the first half, the two teams battled back-and-forth after the break with shots at 10-7 in favor of ASU. Senior goalkeeper Melinda Smith collected four saves in the second frame as Ole Miss fought off a Sun Devil barrage.
Arizona State broke back ahead in the 63rd minute with Feulner notching her second goal off a header in the box, Antoinette Marjanovic on the pass.
ASU's Stacey Tullock added to the score with a penalty kick goal in the final 30 seconds, after Kristin Chapman committed a foul in the box.
"Everyone who watched the game saw a tremendous soccer match tonight," said UM head coach Steve Holeman. "I was proud of the way the girls played and how they responded after the first goal. We pushed at the end for the equalizer, so there wasn't any concern about the final goal.
"It's frustrating we played so well and didn't get the result. We just have to stay focused and remain positive."
Ole Miss continues its Western road swing Sunday at Northern Arizona. The Rebels' seventh consecutive road game is set for noon MT at Flagstaff. Ole Miss won the only previous meeting with NAU, 5-1, last year in Oxford.
