Volleyball Defeats Auburn In Five Games

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team defeated Auburn 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the Student Activities Center to win their first SEC match of the season and their third in a row over the Tigers. The Lady Rebels improved to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in the league, while Auburn dropped to 1-9 and 0-2.
Senior Jaime Burns recorded her fifth double-double of the year, with 21 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Elena Garcia finished with 11 kills and 12 digs, and Leigh Rittiner had 11 kills. Sarah Lansden notched a career-high 19 digs for the Lady Rebels, who hit .221 in the match. Auburn hit .166 in the match. The Tigers' Grace Boyd led Auburn with 23 kills and finished with a .383 hitting percentage. Maggie Zdarsky led the team in digs with 23.
Ole Miss jumped out to a 6-1 lead in game one. They led 14-9, but Auburn rallied to get within, 14-12. The Tigers tied the game at 17-17 and then took their first lead on the next point. Auburn used a 5-1 run to go ahead 23-18, but the Lady Rebels would tie it up 26-26. Ole Miss trailed 28-27 before winning the final three points to take the game 30-27.
Game two seesawed back and forth and then Ole Miss went ahead 15-11. After an Auburn timeout, the Lady Rebels then went on a 12-6 run to take a 27-17 lead. Auburn used its final timeout, but could not overcome the deficit, as the Lady Rebels closed out the 30-19 win. The Lady Rebels held Auburn to only .026 hitting in the second game.
Auburn won game three 30-24 to extend the match. Ole Miss led by three early on, but Auburn would come back to tie it and then take the lead 15-12. The Tigers led 22-17 and then 27-20, but the Lady Rebels used a 4-0 run to get within three (27-24). After a timeout, the Tigers won the final three points for the win.
The Tigers evened the match by taking game four 30-25. Auburn jumped out to a 10-2 lead and built it to 21-13. Ole Miss pulled to within 24-21 but never got any closer, hitting only .135 for the game.
In the deciding game, Ole Miss trailed 3-2, but used a 9-2 run to take a 12-5 lead in the 15-point game. Auburn would cut it to four (13-9), but the Lady Rebels won the final two points to clinch their first road win of the season.
The Lady Rebels return home to the Gillom Sports Center for their next four matches, beginning with Jacksonville State, Friday at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Ole Miss will host South Carolina at 2 p.m.
