Volleyball Defeats Jacksonville State 3-1

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's volleyball team lost the first game to Jacksonville State, but rebounded to win the next three games for a 3-1 win over the Gamecocks Friday night at the Gillom Sports Center. With the win, the Lady Rebels improved to 4-7 overall, while the visiting Gamecocks dropped to 4-7 on the season.
It was a great night for senior outside hitter Jaime Burns, who was honored prior to the match, for achieving her 1,000th career kill. She finished the night with her seventh double-double of the season with 20 kills and 21 digs. She had 43 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .349. Freshman Elena Garcia notched her sixth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 11 digs. She hit .261 on the night.
In game one, Ole Miss got off to a good start, leading 6-3. But Jacksonville State would come back to take the lead and led 19-12 at one point, before going on for the 30-18 win. The Lady Rebels hit just .026 percent, while Jacksonville State hit .263.
Ole Miss stormed out to a 11-3 lead in game two and then led 19-10, before seeing Jacksonville State rally to get within 20-15. The Lady Rebels built their lead back up to eight (27-19), and went on to take the game 30-22. Ole Miss hit .213 in game two, while the Gamecocks dropped off to -.023.
Game three stayed tight with numerous lead changes. The game was tied 22-22, but Ole Miss won four consecutive points to take a 26-22 lead. The Gamecocks then won the next three points to close to within 26-25. Ole Miss answered winning three of the next four points to take a 29-26 lead. Jacksonville State made it 29-27, but a Gamecock service error gave the Lady Rebels a 30-27 win.
With game four tied 10-10, Ole Miss took a 13-10 lead, but Jacksonville State tied it up. The Lady Rebels answered with three straight points to regain a 16-13 lead. They increased their lead to seven (26-19). A service ace by freshman Megan McCune put Ole Miss up 27-19. The Gamecocks won the next point, but the Lady Rebels won the final two points to make it 30-20 and clinch the match.
Ole Miss will host 18th-ranked South Carolina Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center.
