OXFORD, Miss. - In her first competition as a Rebel, freshman Becky Testin batted 7-for-11 to lead Ole Miss to a 3-0 mark Saturday in day one of the fourth-annual Rebel Softball Fall Classic.
The host Rebels' tournament-opening game with Christian Brothers was an 11-2 UM domination. Batting leadoff, Testin, a native of Auburndale, Fla., hit 3-for-3 and scored three times, while sophomore Desiree Layman drove in four runs. Junior hurler Leslie Day surrendered one hit over the five-inning mercy rule affair.
Ole Miss followed up with a 5-4 win over Delta State, fueled by a complete-game three-hitter by junior Lindsay Price. Testin and fellow freshman Brooke Turner collected two hits, and Layman blasted a home run to left field.
The Rebels ended the first day of play with a late night victory over Jackson State, 4-0. Freshman righthander Lindsay Whatley carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and finished with a two-hit shutout. Testin, Layman and Nicole Alger all picked up RBI for Ole Miss.
